    Federally Permitted Charter/Headboats: -If a federally permitted vessel fishing in federal waters catches a species that is closed to harvest in federal waters, the vessel is not allowed to retain that fish. -If a federally permitted vessel fishing in state waters catches a species that is closed to harvest in federal waters but open in state waters, the vessel is not allowed to retain that species. -If a federally permitted vessel fishing in federal waters catches a species that is closed to harvest in state waters but open to harvest in federal waters, they may retain that fish if they do not stop to fish in state waters when returning to port. All gear must be stowed.

    Commercial regulations for South Atlantic Federal Waters:
    OPEN
    Two commercial fishing seasons for red porgy with 30% of the commercial annual catch limit allocated to Season 1 and 70% allocated to Season 2, with the transfer of any remaining quota from Season 1 to Season 2.
    Season 1: January 1 - April 30; Season 2: May 1 - December 31
    Size Limit: 14 inch total length
    Trip Limit: Season 1: 60 fish; Season 2: 120 fish
    All species must be landed with head and fins intact.
    Commercial fishermen are required to use dehooking tools when fishing for snapper grouper species. A descending device is required on board all vessels fishing for or possessing snapper and grouper species in federal waters of the South Atlantic. The descending device must be readily available for use and attached to at least 16 ounces of weight and at least 60 feet of line. Get more information at Best Fishing Practices Webpage. The use of non-stainless steel hooks is required when using hook-and-line gear with natural baits. The use of non-offset, non-stainless steel circle hooks is required for all species in the snapper grouper complex when using hook-and-line gear with natural baits in waters North of 28 degrees N. latitude. After the commercial quota is met, all purchase and sale is prohibited and harvest and/or possession is limited to the recreational bag limit. This prohibition does not apply to fish harvested, landed, and sold prior to the quota being reached and held in cold storage by a dealer. Quotas are given in gutted weights.
    Commercial snapper grouper vessels must have onboard NMFS approved sea turtle release gear and follow smalltooth sawfish release protocol. See the Handling and Release Protocol from NOAA Fisheries or call 727-824-5312.
