    Unlawful to possess in ocean waters (state or federal).
    It is unlawful to possess more than one (1) American shad taken by hook-and-line or for recreational purposes in coastal and joint waters of Albemarle, Croatan, Roanoke, and Currituck Sounds and tributaries and Bay and Neuse Rivers.
    It is unlawful to possess more than five (5) American shad taken by hook-and-line or for recreational purposes in coastal and joint waters of Cape Fear River and tributaries.
    It is unlawful to possess more than ten (10) American shad taken by hook-and-line or for recreational purposes in coastal and joint waters of Pamlico and Pungo Rivers and tributaries and Pamlico Sound.
    It is unlawful to possess more than ten (10) American or hickory shad, in the aggregate, per person per day taken by hook-and-line or for recreational purposes in all the internal coastal and joint fishing waters.

    In Merrimack River and Connecticut River anglers may harvest up to 3 American Shad per angler per day.
    In all other Massachusetts state waters the harvest of shad is prohibited; shad must be released immediately following capture to ensure survival.
